It was quite an adventure.” The first area rugs imported by the company were a few shipments of Sparta Rugs from Smyrna. At the time, the company began affixing “Couristan” trademark labels to the back of each and every rug it imported. This mark was composed from the family’s surname “Couri” and the frequently used suffix “stan”, referring to the region of small weaving villages in which the company imported its rugs from. The company would quickly begin to broaden its horizons, as well as its area rug offerings by importing rugs from India in 1927. In the 1930’s, Couristan began importing handmade hooked rugs from China and braided rugs from Japan. At the time nearly 99 percent of the total production of Japan’s floor coverings were being exported to the United States. According to Ron Couri, C

Vacuum regularly with the hard attachment of your vacuum. Refrain from using a beater brush. Spills should be cleaned as soon as possible. Spot cleaning with non-bleach detergent is fine. For deep cleaning, we recommend professional cleaning. All rugs lay flat when they leave the factory. When the rug is new, let it flatten before use. Work out wrinkles using your hands or a pole (the carpet tube works well too). Once the rug is flat, we recommend a rug pad for longer wear. Occasionally sprouts will appear in your rug. These are a natural by-product of the traditional method that Homespice uses to make their braided rugs. Simply use a sharp pair of scissors and trim the sprout even with the rug. Braided rugs are stitched together using extra strong thread. Should the threads get damaged or cut, the braids may start to separate. We recommend sewing the braids together with a needle and thread. If left unattended, this separation will grow.
